Animal Psychology

The course provides a general introduction to animal behaviour across the phylogenetic spectrum, from microbes and insects to birds and primates. A comparative evolotionary perspective is taken, with discussion of how behaviour has evolved to adapt to animals to their different social and physical environments. The important role of learning in guiding even the simplest animals’ behaviour is not neglected, however. The course focuses on two main areas, physical cognition and social cognition. Topics of physical cognition include how animals navigate the world, how they optimse risky foraging decisions, and how they manufacture and use tools. Topics of social cognition include social learning, comminication, and animals’ understanding of others’ minds.
