Yes, if you have very special reasons.
Primarily at the regular exam in January, then at the make-up exam in February. If the course continues to be given you can normally take future make-up exams.
No, it is not mandatory, but it is a good opportunity to meet those who give the course, as well as an opportunity to ask questions.
