New Location

In February 2010, the Department of Psychology including the Music Psychology Group moved to a new building, "Blåsenhus", which was inaugurated on March 11.

"Blåsenhus" is beautifully located near the castle and right across the Botanical gardens, which we can gaze upon from our new, sound-proofed laboratory. The history of the music psychology research conducted at the previous location is summarized in a commemorative book, "Psykologi i Munken 1975 - 2010".

New Professor

On April 15th 2010, Patrik Juslin was appointed full professor of psychology, especially music psychology, at Uppsala University .

New Handbook

A new volume, Handbook of Music and Emotion: Theory, Research, Applications, edited by Patrik Juslin and John Sloboda, was published early in 2010. For further information about this book, see the Oxford University Press website: http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199230143.do

New Project

The Music Psychology Group is currently initiating a new project, based on the "MecWork" workshop held in Uppsala in December 2009. The project will aim to develop standardized paradigms (musical stimuli and experimental procedures) that can reliably activate specific psychological mechanisms to evoke emotions in listeners. These paradigms will be used to test predictions from the BRECVEM framwork, and will also be made available for other researchers.

Special Issues on Music and Emotion

For those of you who are interested in music and emotion, it may be nice to know that two "special issues" on music and emotion based on the International Conference on Music and Emotion in Durham 2009 (http://www.dur.ac.uk/music.emotion/) are currently in preparation. The first issue is edited by Alex Lamont and Tuomas Eerola, and will appear in Musicae Scientiae. The second one is edited by Michael Spitzer, and will appear in Music Analysis. Both issues are scheduled for publication in 2011, and the Music Psychology Group in Uppsala will be among the contributors.

Book on Strong Experiences with Music

Professor emeritus Alf Gabrielsson has published his new book, "Starka musikupplevelser: Musik är mycket mer än bara musik" ("Strong experiences with music: Music is much more than just music"). It is written in Swedish and offers the first comprehensive report of Alf's well-known project on Strong Experiences with Music (SEM).

Music and Health

Daniel Västfjäll, Patrik Juslin, and Terry Hartig are currently preparing a chapter featuring new data for a forthcoming volume on music, health, and wellbeing, edited by Raymond MacDonald, Gunter Kreutz, and Laura Mitchell, which will be published by Oxford University Press. The book will provide a multidisciplinary approach to music and health, drawing on the arts, sciences and social sciences.
