The Personality and Social Psychology Research Group

Personality and social psychology often study the same, or at least similar, phenomena. Our research is no exception. It adopts various personality and social psychological perspectives to study issues such as, stereotyping and prejudice, and discrimination. Our research also concern more theoretical issues such as the stability and changeability of the self, attitudes and behavoir. Whereas much research on, for example, prejudice focuses on either personality or social psychological explanations, we generally aim to integrate these perspectives. From a personality perspective we include predictors from the Big-Five model in our research. These factors are often complemented in our research by variables measuring social beliefs and adherence to ideologies (Right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation). From a social psychological perspective we study the effects of, for example, group membership, group identification and cultural expectations. Finally, we use concepts from a social cognitive perspective, such as stereotype knowledge and the cognitive style of individuals with personalities predicting prejudice. In our research we employ experimental as well as correlational designs.
