Sheng-Ying Isabella Weng, Royal College of Music (Sweden): “Melodic Intonation Perceived and Performed by Concertmasters”

Abstract
During solo performances, classical soloists generally pay close attention to the produced sound, continuously assessing and adjusting it to enhance the musical experience. For violinists, intonation is generally considered one central expressive means. However, relationships between perceived and performed intonation in Western classical music have shown to be less straightforward than one might expect. In this talk, I will share my latest results on six concertmasters' intonation preferences in listening and in their own practices. Pedagogical implications and possible future research will be discussed.
