Abstract
This talk reviews research from before birth to old age looking at how music that matters plays a key role in a range of musical, emotional, social and cultural contexts. It draws on my own work and that of others to illustrate the importance of music in experiencing, making sense of, and recalling important aspects of our selves, and brings together the individual and the social aspects of music.
